Donating your used shell or boat is simple, because we take care of all the details! We can arrange for a third-party appraisal of the value of your boat, and issue you a tax receipt for that amount. Depending on your tax situation, in Canada you can claim up to 75% of your net income each year in charitable donations; in the U.S. the current amount is 50%. We look after the hassles and costs of storage, transportation and broker's fees where applicable. Your shell or boat will either be used in our programs or sold by Go Rowing and Paddling Association of Canada, with all proceeds going to assist in funding and improving our community-based programs!
People give boats to GO for a variety of reasons:
To benefit community based programs for all ages
To receive a tax credit
To avoid the hassles of selling the boat
To avoid costly broker’s fees
To no longer have to pay storage
To avoid the time and cost involved in ongoing upkeep/repair of the vessel
With your donation you receive a tax receipt for the appraised value of the donated boat. And don't forget - you are supporting a worthwhile cause that has hundreds of people young and old annually have access to rowing and paddling programs.
What Shells or Boats are Suitable?
Any operational rowing shell, ocean kayak, outrigger canoe, dragon boat, power or sailboat, large or small, fiberglass or wood, we've accepted them all over the years. “Project boats” are generally not financially viable. As a rule of thumb, a boat must be operational capable of being and its value must substantially exceed the costs of delivery.
What Happens to Your Boat?
Many boats that have been donated to our Society have been used for many years for our various community based programs ranging from adaptive rowing to high performance. However, not every boat is suitable for program use and training. A few become candidates for minor restoration and some are sold with the proceeds used to supplement the costs of upgrading our equipment.
